How to Import Content into Canvas
Overview
Project Type: Job aid
Audience: Learning and development team
Responsibilities: Instructional design, visual design, development
Tools Used: SnagIt, Canva, Canvas
Problem + Solution
Problem
After using Blackboard as their primary learning management system for five years, the upper management team a ticket distribution company decided to switch to Canvas. The learning and development team was tasked with moving all of the trainings they had created on Blackboard to Canvas. However, most of the employees tasked with this responsibility have never used Canvas before. In order to make the transition from Blackboard to Canvas as smooth as possible, the upper management team decided to create resources to help their learning and development team with this process.
Solution
After speaking with upper management, I proposed creating a job aid to assist the learning and development team. This job aid would provide step-by-step instructions on how to import previous training content to Canvas. The primary goals of this project were to increase the learning and development team's confidence in porting over content to Canvas and increase the speed in which this task is completed. Once the client accepted my proposal, I proceeded with designing and developing the project.
Process
Research
The first step in the creation of this job aid was to determine the steps to import Blackboard content into Canvas. I contacted a representative from Canvas's support team as the subject matter expert (SME) for this project, and I created the list of steps using the information they provided.
Design
Once I had gathered the information I needed, I began designing the layout of the job aid. For this project, I used the tool Snagit. I chose one of the premade templates available via Snagit, and I began customizing the layout. For the title "card," I created a custom design in Canva using the Canvas logo and brand colors.
Development
After customizing the Snagit template and adding in the custom Canva title card I created, I began developing the job aid. I first logged onto Canvas and gathered screenshots of myself walking through each of the five steps. Then, I added those screenshots to the job aid and added arrows when necessary. Finally, I added the written directions and adjusted the spacing as necessary. Once I had finished developing and exporting the job aid, I had a couple of managers review and approve it.
Takeaways
Completing this project allowed me to become more comfortable using Snagit and continue improving my visual designing skills. If I were to go back and make any improvements based on the feedback I have received and my own thoughts, I would:
Create a video version: While some learners prefer written instructions like I provided with this job aid, others benefit more from video assistance. Creating a video version of this tutorial would benefit those learners, as well as those who are visually impaired or have visual processing issues.
Create additional Canvas tutorials: If I company is transitioning to Canvas from another LMS, every employee at that company would need to be trained on how to use this new system. With more time, I would enjoy getting to create additional training content for employees who are new to Canvas.
