Problem + Solution

Problem

At a corporate office for a major app developer, several managers had reported increasing rates of burnout amongst their employees. There have been small efforts in the past to remind employees to take care of themselves, but those efforts had proven unsuccessful. In order to prevent a decrease in employee productivity and an increase in employee turnover, upper management decided to prioritize educating their staff on how to prevent burnout.

Solution

After speaking with upper management, a human resources representative, and a group of employees, I proposed creating a job aid that would provide useful information on how to prevent burnout. This visual reminder would be posted in commonly visited areas of the office, such as break areas and restrooms. The primary goals of this project were to increase employees' knowledge of how to prevent themselves from burning out and improve employee productivity and morale. Once the client accepted my proposal, I proceeded with designing and developing the project.

Process

Research

The first step in the creation of this job aid was to gather tips on how to prevent burnout. I consulted a mental health professional as the subject matter expert (SME) for this project, and together we crafted a short list of easy to implement tips.

Design

Once I had gathered the information I needed, I began designing the layout of the job aid. I decided to writing my text-based storyboard in Google Docs. While the SME and I brainstormed many great tips, I decided to cap the list at eight in order to not overwhelm those reading the job aid. If an employee is already feeling overwhelmed by their workload, it would not be helpful for this resource to make those negative feelings even worse.

Development

Using the plan I designed, I quickly developed the job aid using Canva. I chose blue to be the predominant color because blue is a calming color. For the two tips at the bottom of the job aid, I colored those yellow to help them stand out as they are both addressing more serious mental health concerns. Once I finished the development process, I had several managers and a representative from the human resources department review and approve of the project.

Takeaways

Completing this project was a great opportunity for me to continue developing my visual and graphic design skills. If I were to go back and make any improvements based on the feedback I have received and my own thoughts, I would:

  1. Expand on this topic: With more time, I would love to create an in-depth training on preventing burnout. Mental health is a topic I am very passionate about, and I believe I could create many engaging and supportive resources for employees.

  2. Create alternative versions: Depending on the time of year, changes within a company, and other factors, the best ideas for preventing burnout can change. In addition, some self care tips will work better for some than others. For these reasons, I think it would be great to update this job aid every month or so with new tips and ideas for employees to try.
